Tips For Maximizing Closet Space

Having a disorganized closet can be a time waster when you're trying to get dressed. Sorting through wrinkled pants and a pile of jumbled shirts, and then discovering that you're missing a shoe, can quickly put you in a bad mood. Take the frustration out of choosing your clothes by following these closet ideas and tips.

Clear The Clutter

Before you begin overhauling your closet, take everything out and sort it all into piles. Place items you want to keep into one pile and put items that you want to donate or give away into another pile. If you find clothing items that you no longer wear because they don't fit or you don't like them, place those into the donate pile. Sort your clothes into winter and summer piles and only place clothes for the current season back into your closet.

Maximize Space

Use every inch of space in your closet to organize your clothing and accessories. Place double rods in your closet to hang twice as many blouses and pants. Place a shelving unit on the top shelf of your closet and you can stack items all the way to the ceiling. Hang clothes vertically by placing an "S" hook on the rod and attaching a chain to the bottom of the hook. Hang shirts or pants vertically on the rings of the chain. If your shoes take up too much room on the floor of your closet, purchase a shoe rack or shelves. Store shoes that you don't wear very often underneath your bed.

Use Storage Containers

Place items that you don't use very often inside lidded totes and place them on the floor and on the top shelf of your closet. Use plastic containers for smaller items and stack smaller containers on top of larger totes. Purchase clear containers so that you can see what's inside and you won't have to open every one to find what you're looking for.
